Back-To-School Energy Savings Tips

Going back to school can be expensive! Southern Comfort Mechanical shares back-to-school energy savings tips to help ease your wallet woes.

10° for 10% Savings
If the kids are at school and you’re at work, set your thermostat 7-10° higher than normal for just 8 hours a day can result in up to 10% annual energy savings.

Get Smart…
Controls, that is. Programmable thermostats allow you to control your HVAC system even when you’re not around. Maximize your energy savings by matching your thermostat settings to your schedule means you’re cooling only to the level you have to while you’re away or asleep.

Filter Frequency
Your system works hardest in the warm months, and high traffic in and out of your home that back-to-school season can bring can increase immensely in these months. The United States Department of Energy reports that changing your HVAC filter can improve the efficiency of your HVAC equipment by 5% to 15%. Change your filter monthly during this busy season to keep your system running optimally and your energy savings maximized.

Close the Drapes
Cool your house by not letting in the heat! Shades and/or blinds provide a great barrier to the outside heat, and not require any electricity usage. If you currently have shades in your home keep them closed during the day, especially when the sun is beating down in the afternoon.  Medium-colored draperies with white plastic backings can reduce heat gains by 33%, studies have shown. Keep blinds and curtains closed during the daytime while you’re away to preserve cooler temperatures in your home and your energy savings at their peak.

Indoor Air Quality – Battling Allergens Indoors

Most of us think of Spring’s arrival as a breath of fresh air.  That is, until we realize that we live in one of the allergy capitals of the US.  That’s right – the Dallas area was ranked by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America in the top 30 Spring Allergy Capitals for the last five years.   While there’s little that can be done to improve the air outdoors, there are ways to make the air we breathe indoors healthier for our families.  In honor of Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, Southern Comfort Mechanical is bringing you indoor air quality tips for your Flower Mound air conditioning system.

Indoor Air Quality

Indoor Air Quality, or IAQ, refers to the condition of the air inside your home and how it contributes to your comfort and wellness.  The EPA reports that people are spending up to 90% of their time indoors.  Spending more time indoors exposes your family to higher levels of airborne pollutants like viruses, bacteria and other organic compounds in the air.

Without proper ventilation in the home, indoor air pollutants become trapped and contribute to unhealthy indoor air quality levels.  To mitigate poor indoor air quality in Corinth homes, Southern Comfort Mechanical recommends:

Air Duct Cleaning

Over time, air ducts become contaminated with dust particles, pollen and other debris that aggravate allergies and cause other health issues.  High humidity levels increase the potential for mold and spores dispersal into your home via the air conditioning system.  Schedule your professional air duct cleaning in Flower Mound with Southern Comfort Mechanical to eliminate the risk for microbiological growth and other airborne contaminants.

Air Duct Sealing

Duct systems are supposed to distribute conditioned air from your central HVAC system to your living spaces.  Duct systems with leaks, holes or poor connections can result in a loss of efficiency of up to 20% according to EnergyStar.  Further, those leaky ducts allow insulation particles, dust and fumes to enter the system, aggravating asthma and allergies.  Sealing ducts save you money while reducing the risk of pollutants entering ducts and circulating through your home.

Air Filtration

Most modern homes are designed to be self-contained for energy efficiency.  This means very little outside air enters the home via your Lantana air conditioning system, making air filtration a key component of maintaining indoor air quality.  Your HVAC filter collects contaminants and particles before the air gets distributed into your living spaces. Air filters will inevitably get dirty, but should not be allowed to become clogged. A clogged filter is not only bad for your indoor air quality, it can also create serious airflow problems and may cause a system shutdown.  Your Corinth HVAC filter should be replaced every 30 to 90 days, depending on variables in your home environment, such as high-traffic, pet shedding or home repair projects. Check your filter monthly to determine if a change is needed.

If you want to improve your Flower Mound indoor air quality, contact the skilled technicians at Southern Comfort Mechanical. We’re here to help you improve the efficiency and air filtration of your system.  972-420-1700.

The Best Time to Purchase an A/C System

One of the best and most frequent questions our technicians receive in the field is “When is the best time to purchase an air conditioning system?”  If you’re in the market to replace your Flower Mound air conditioning system, you might be tempted to hold off on investing in new HVAC equipment until your A/C is on its last legs or for the change of seasons and extreme temperatures.  However, waiting for either of those things to come to pass will likely work against you. The key to receiving the best price for a new A/C system in Lantana and beyond is to understand the cyclical nature of the industry.

It would be easy to think that, because Lantana HVAC companies are busy as bees installing new systems in the Summer, it’s the best time for competitive prices, but that often isn’t the case. In our last Blog entry, we introduced you to the so-called “Shoulder Seasons” – those times of the year edging into the more demanding Summer and Winter months for HVAC companies such as Southern Comfort Mechanical.  In Texas, those seasons are late Autumn and early Spring.

Why, you may ask?  These times of the year are beautiful – perfect for getting out of doors, opening up your home for fresh breezes and saving on your energy bills.  Simply put, it’s not a time of the year you’re completely reliant upon air conditioning to regulate the temperature of your home.  It’s also when your Southern Comfort Mechanical Technician has the most time to spend with you to examine your options when buying a new A/C system.  During peak seasons, that time is at a premium and ultimately you end up competing not for a better price but for the first available system installation date for your Corinth area home.

In early Spring and late Fall, the industry itself experiences lower volume.  The various manufacturers offer promotional sales and preseason discounts during those times to engage consumers year round.  This means Southern Comfort Mechanical can work with you to select a quality system that is optimized specifically for your Flower Mound home at a price that can’t be matched during the peak Summer and Winter months.  In other words, the best time to purchase is when you can take your time and make an educated purchasing decision with the help of qualified professionals.  Call our office today to discuss these great deals and to schedule your free air conditioning estimate.  Our office staff is standing by at (972) 420-1700.

The History of Modern Air Conditioning

History of Air Conditioning

Extra, Extra! The Cost of R-22 Expected to Double in Price in 2015!

If your air conditioning system is still using the old R-22 refrigerant and you’ve been band aiding it for the last few summers, you may want to consider replacement for many reasons. Repair, efficiency, government regulations and the price of rising refrigerant are all major factors. Southern Comfort Mechanical, serving Lantana and surrounding areas, is here to help you make the correct long-term decisions when it comes to your home and your air conditioning and heating needs.

Repairing your older HVAC systems can be a hassle for many reasons including: the part has become obsolete, specials order parts that may take days to arrive, constant repairs and expensive refrigerant leaks. (See chart below) As of now, R-22 is costing upwards of $75-90 a pound; that cost will be increasing even more as they are limiting production of it. In 2014 they produced and imported 51 million pounds and in 2015 they are only releasing 22 million pounds. And as of 2020, it will be non-existent. Southern Comfort Mechanical only uses clean, straight from the factory refrigerant. If you think you are getting a really good deal on it, chances are they are using recycled refrigerant. DO NOT use recycled refrigerant in your air conditioning system. That is just asking for your system to be compromised.

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 has rolled out their new regulated standard efficiency. As of January 1, 2015 here in Texas it is required to have a minimum of a 14 SEER (seasonal energy efficiency rating) for both air conditioning and heat pumps. Be sure that when shopping for new equipment you keep this in mind. You may think you are getting a really good deal from other local Flower Mound companies, but if it’s not up to the SEER rating, you are getting robbed.

There are many factors to consider when you are looking to replace your HVAC system, including cost. With the cooler weather and winter right around the corner, now is a great time to take advantage of Trane’s special offers. Now through December 15, 2014, Trane is offering 0% interest for 60 months on qualifying systems or up to $1000 cash back. The cost of rising refrigerant and new government standard are now two major considerations. Southern Comfort Mechanical is here to answer all of your questions and guide you to making the right investment for the future of your home. Schedule your free estimate today by calling 972-420-1700.
