Selecting A Heating and Air Conditioning Company

Selecting the best heating and air conditioning repair company for your Lantana or Flower Mound area home means entrusting the care of your biggest investment to virtual strangers, so how do you know which company to choose? Here are some recommended steps to help you find the right heating and air conditioning contractor for your needs:

Ask your neighbors for referrals. Who have your neighbors worked with? Was the customer service experience a good one or did it leave much to be desired? Your friends and neighbors now don’t just include those you share a property line with. You can often find shared experiences on your community Facebook page and NextDoor neighborhood. What company do you find them often suggesting as the most economical and honest air conditioning company?  Southern Comfort Mechanical

Read the online reviews and temper them with what your friends and neighbors have experienced. Consistent positive ratings across a variety of categories and platforms is a good indicator of performance and cross-referencing those with the experiences you’ve heard from your friends is an excellent way to narrow the field. Search for the best air conditioning service in Flower Mound in a generalized search, or visit some of the more common review sites, such as  Yelp!, Google+, Angie’s List, the BBB, etc.

Avoid contractor services and other gimmicks, and rely upon your own research. These companies provide paid leads to contractors and the most reputable and established HVAC companies do not participate in them. Similarly, be skeptical of incredibly low cost services or memberships that are likely to come with costly hidden expenses.
Research and contact the company. Visit the company’s website to familiarize yourself with their offerings and to look for informative content. Check to be sure they employ NATE certified technicians (the industry standard). Check for proper licensing in your city and state. Feel free to ask for references when you call. Ask questions pertinent to your concerns. Do they seem responsive and knowledgeable, or just about making the sale?

Find the right contractor and develop a relationship with the company before something goes wrong. When your system struggles in extreme weather, your first priority will be to get it in working order as quickly as possible for your family’s comfort. It’s in these moments you will feel pressed for time and can end up spending much more than anticipated. So find your local Lewisville Heating and Air Conditioning company well before you need major intervention and take advantage of their preventive maintenance program to prolong the life of your system.

Now that you’ve found Southern Comfort Mechanical, you need look no further.  Southern Comfort Mechanical is the best air conditioning and heating company in Flower Mound and the surrounding cities.  We come recommended by your friends and neighbors and have excellent online reviews, offer outstanding customer service, employ experienced certified technicians and are dedicated to delivering quality products and services.  Contact us today to begin your relationship with a heating and air conditioning company you can trust and rely upon.

R-22 Versus R-410

R-22 Versus R-410

R-410a, R-22, set, hike! No, they aren’t football plays; although they sound like it. They are two different types of refrigerant. “Freon” as some people call it is essential to making your system run and cooling your home. Although they do the same job, they are made of different properties and one has been deemed harmful to the environment.

R-22 is a type of refrigerant that has been around since the 1950s. Recently the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that R-22 is depleting the ozone layer. Due to that, the government has tightened their regulations and the cost of R-22 has skyrocketed and will continue to do so. What does that mean to you as the consumer?  It means higher prices, “hard to find” parts which are necessary to keep your old system running, and possibly going days without air conditioning.  Chances are if your unit if 11 years or older, your system is still running on the old R-22 Freon. Sure a pound or two here and there isn’t going to break the bank, but repairing a leak in the system and continually charging the system can cost a lot.

R-410a is now used to replace R-22.  It works the same, but it is not harmful to the environment should it leak into the atmosphere. It’s also much cheaper, half the cost and will continue to drop as R-22 rises. What you need to know is that you can’t put R-410A into an R-22 air conditioning system.  If your system runs on R-22 and you are continuing to charge it year after year, you need to think about replacing the system.

So whether you are considering replacing a part or your entire system remember, R-410a is the way to go. Not only will you save money on refrigerant, you will also save money with a more efficient system and lower utilities and help the environment.  Southern Comfort Mechanical is here to help you in your decision while being environmentally friendly. We only install R-410a complete systems, we use energy efficient parts, and we recycle everything. Little things do count and we are proud to do our part!

Is Your AC System Frozen Up? Helpful DIY Tips

After a long, hard day at work, the last thing you want to come home to is a hot house. If your air conditioner is blowing warm air, check to see if your system is “frozen up.”  Go to your evaporator coil, which is typically located in the attic or hall closet. If you see ice, here are a few tips to help pin point the problem and to know what to financially expect.

First, you need to thaw it out. Turn your air conditioner off and your fan on. Be sure to have a bucket or pan to catch the water from it thawing out.

While the coil is thawing out, check your air filter. If it’s dirty and 100% clogged, you may have identified the problem. Remove the filter and go get a new one. Be sure to get the correct size. Once home, put the filter in. Do not turn on the system until it is completely thawed.  Once it is, turn it back on. If the air conditioner comes on and cool air is coming out, you’ve saved yourself a service call. If starts, but freezes up again it’s in all likelihood that you have low refrigerant. If you never heard the indoor fan motor come on at all, then it is your motor.

In order to avoid any of these common problems, preventative maintenance is key. Give Southern Comfort Mechanical a call at 972-420-1700 and schedule your check up today!

Preventing Allergies with Duct Cleaning, Indoor Air Quality

Air Duct CleaningAccording to the Environmental Protection Agency, the connection between respiratory issues and mold and allergens can all be traced to proper – or improper – indoor air quality. Among the stronger allergens found in the air, ironically, is common house dust.

What many don’t realize is that house dust can be heavily contaminated with disgusting particles such as cast skins and fecal matter from dust mites. With the help of one ounce of dust, as many as 40,000 dust mites can grow and mature. Even the cleanest house in the world can have dust mites, which means allergies are high-risk at all times. It also is a fact that dust mites can be a major factor in respiratory issues and even asthma.

Allergy shots are a good idea, but when it comes to maintaining respiratory issues, our Lewisville TX HVAC representatives at Southern Comfort Mechanical A/C & Heating suggest a thorough air duct cleaning, as well as the installation of new air filters. Dirt and dust accumulates in air ducts, which results in a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Duct cleaning reduces allergens and also increases the efficiency of your air conditioning unit.

That means repeat trips to the state fair, carpools for the kids’ after-school practices and rehearsals, and trying to get in shape for the annual downtown turkey trot.

It also means low or no humidity and a welcome respite from high air conditioning bills!

However, just because you won’t need the a/c for a few months, doesn’t mean that it should go neglected. It still requires proper maintenance as discussed in our previous post on HVAC preventive maintenance.

One of the easiest ways to help ensure your outdoor air conditioning system stays protected from increased morning condensation, falling leaves, other debris–and the occasional misfired football or baseball, is to purchase an all-purpose air conditioner cover. To find out which air conditioner cover is best for your system, just give us a call at 972-420-1700 or check out some of the covers offered by our partners.

Now about getting you in shape for the Turkey Trot, well that’s another story….
